The Mission

Peace Action West advocates for a foreign policy that embodies the best values of the American people. As a membership organization, it fosters broad-based civic activism to create a strong voice for peaceful and pragmatic solutions to global problems. Peace Action West’s activities serve as a bridge between the public and the officials who make decisions that affect the lives of millions of people.   By mobilizing diverse constituencies though grassroots action, Peace Action West works to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons in the future while stopping the development, testing, spread and use of those weapons today; protect human rights around the world by controlling the global trade in lethal weapons; advance national spending priorities that meet the nation’s real security and domestic needs, and promote resolution of international conflicts through cooperation and diplomacy.

Why was your organization launched?

The Committee for a SANE Nuclear Policy is founded and launches its first ad in the New York Times. SANE's founders, inspired by Dr. Albert Schweitzer's "Call to Conscience," which stirred public action about the dangers of nuclear radiation, included Saturday Review editor Norman Cousins, American Friends Service Committee member Clarence Pickett, and poet Lenore Marshall, among others. The committee's mission was to "develop public support for a boldly conceived and executed policy which will lead mankind away from war and toward peace and justice."

What are the organization’s goals for this year?

1. Lay the groundwork for global elimination of nuclear weapons, enacting concrete steps to move in that direction.

2. Promote direct, unconditional negotiations between the US and Iran.

3. End the occupation of Iraq and replace it with diplomacy, economic and humanitarian aid.

Programs/Initiatives

1. Build coalitions with community and faith leaders as part of the Campaign for a Nuclear Weapons Free World.

2. Citizen Diplomat campaign to engage US citizens and educate them about Iran.

3. Local and Washington DC lobby meetings throughout the year.
