To: Sunday, April 01, 2012

San Francisco, CA -
Presented by CIIS Public Programs & Performances
There is an awesome power in the human voice. When uncommon voices are blended for the common good, they become a vocal community at its best. Masterfully led by Ysaye M. Barnwell, singers and non-singers alike share the common experience of learning in the oral tradition and singing rhythms, chants, traditional songs from Africa and the diaspora, and a variety of songs from African American culture. These include spirituals, ring shouts, hymns, gospels, and songs from the civil rights movement. The historical, social, and political context will provide an introduction to the songs.
Ysaye M. Barnwell, PhD, performed with the internationally renowned African American female quintet Sweet Honey In The Rock for more than twenty years. She has spent much of her time off stage working as a master teacher and choral clinician in African American cultural performance.

Ah, Wilderness! Written by Eugene ONeill Directed by Kyle Donnelly In the Fichandler Stage March 9-April 8, 2012 Part of the Eugene ONeill Festival
Return to an idyllic age of Americana in Eugene ONeills unabashedly romantic and sweetly funny Ah, Wilderness! As the Connecticut-based Miller clan plans their traditional Fourth of July festivities, their dreamy-eyed middle child Richard is wrestling with cultural conventions, political uncertainty, the power of literature and the exquisite pain of love. The memories of family life were never so delicately portrayed as in ONeills only comedy, his coming-of-age love letter to a simpler time that finds the master playwright at his most wistful and serene. (New York Times).

Long Days Journey Into Night Written by Eugene ONeill Directed by Robin Phillips In the Kreeger Theater March 30-May 6, 2012 Part of the Eugene ONeill Festival
Delusion and disenchantment have pitted the Tyrone family members against one another for decades. One fateful day, as their increasingly drunken hours slip by, they must either confront their defeated dreams or else be forever doomed to a cycle of guilt and resentment. Eugene ONeills autobiographical masterwork exposes the lies we tell, the deceptions we craft, and the undercurrent of compassion that, if uncovered, can redeem us in the end. This Pulitzer Prize-winning American treasure restores the drama to literature and the theater to art (New York Times).
Sunday, Tuesday & Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday & Saturday at 8:00 p.m. Saturday & Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Weekdays at noon on Tuesday, 4/17 and Wednesday, 4/25 Full calendar: http://tickets.arenastage.org/single/psDetail.aspx?psn=13192

San Francisco, CA -
During the Civil War from 1980-1992 Carlos Henriquez Consalvi, aka "Santiago," was the most recognized voice in El Salvador. Broadcasting on the FMLN's "Radio Venceremos," his courageous voice kept people's spirits up as he denounced the daily violations of human rights committed by the Salvadorian military.
Santiago and his team were among the first to report on the infamous massacre at El Mozote. The radio played a major role in recruiting campesino support for the FMLN, and provided education about Salvadoran history. Consalvi also serves as Director of the Museo de la Palabra y la Imagen.
Join us for this discussion on war, memory and the role of community media in El Salvador.
COST: Free.

Free, but required, tickets to the Sings are available by emailing your name and address and your ticket request, including number of tickets and desired night of performance, to messiahsing@extranet.wvpc.org.
COST: Free, but tickets required. Email your address and date & number of tickets requested.
